Supplying plastic packaging materials globally, planning and developing packages, and caring for the environment

TECHNOLOGY

Providing a wide variety of raw materials, intermediate materials, and new materials, as well as taking a proactive approach to various environmental issues

We have two pillars of plastic packaging materials handled by ITOCHU Plastics. The first is “pellets (granular plastic),” the raw material for plastic packaging materials, and the second is processed products such as “sheets” and “films,” which are called “intermediate materials” processed from pellets.
Plastic packaging materials are a familiar part of our everyday lives, but they also contain some of the world’s most advanced technology. For example, even a single sheet of packaging film, used for sweets and other items, is actually comprised of a combination of several functional plastics. The transparent portion, where you can see what is inside, is made of a film with high barrier properties against water vapor and oxygen, allowing for long-term preservation of the contents. Furthermore, the outermost film is laminated with a film suitable for printing, while the innermost film is combined with a film suitable for sealing with heat, thus creating a layer of multi-functional films.
ITOCHU Plastics utilizes the global network of the ITOCHU Group to supply raw materials and intermediate materials for these plastic packaging materials, and is constantly developing new markets.
We are also committed to taking a company-wide approach to environmental issues such as marine plastics, food loss, and global warming, and were the first company in Japan to produce environmentally friendly biomass plastic food containers by using raw plastic materials derived from nature instead of conventional petroleum.
We also promote the extended life of food by combining packaging materials with diverse functions, and optimize the use of packaging materials through package planning and design.

CUTTING-EDGE

We plan and develop packages in cooperation with our customers, and also develop human resources to achieve this

Another pillar of plastic packaging materials is the planning, development, and supply of packaging for boxed lunches, ready-made dishes, beverages, and frozen desserts, which are mainstay products in convenience stores, as well as sales promotion stickers and barcode labels to enhance product appeal.
Product packaging for convenience stores must always be one step ahead in terms of environmental measures, safety, and cost performance, and of course user-friendliness. To fulfill these needs, ITOCHU Plastics is promoting various initiatives that go beyond the boundaries of a specialized trading company.
One of these is the planning and development of packages that are integrated with the customer. Our in-house designers are certified food coordinators, and they design and propose packaging that reflects the needs of our customers from scratch. This year (2023), we were again awarded the “Food Packaging Category Award” at the Japan Packaging Contest, one of the largest contests in the packaging industry, for the fourth consecutive year.
In the area of logistics, we have established a “joint delivery system” that has significantly improved the efficiency of delivery operations. We have also invested in the development of a new type of equipment to produce our patented packages, and are expanding our business by lending this equipment to material and food manufacturers.
Furthermore, to meet the needs of customers in the convenience store and food service industries who wish to strengthen their overseas operations in North America and other regions, particularly in Southeast Asia, ITOCHU Plastics and the ITOCHU Group are also developing various support services through their overseas locations. In addition to supplying packaging materials, we offer a variety of services related to packaging that satisfy our customers’ needs.
As for human resource development, which is at the root of these businesses, we have introduced a training program to certify “packaging managers” with expertise in all kinds of raw materials and packaging materials. We are also focusing on training experts in packaging materials.
